The
big one - the Spa 25 hour. This was a race in the Fun Cup car, with my usual
co-driver Rob, plus Philip Harris (who raced with me at Snetterton last year). With 131 cars on the grid, this was going to be a busy and fun 25 hours. We
qualified in 55th place, which was disappointing, but didn't really matter for
such a long race (provided we didn't get caught up in someone elses accident). The top brits were in 3rd, 4th and 12th places.
As it is my car, I claimed the honour of the first stint, and what fun it was!
By the end of it, we were the lead British car, and running in the top 10.
The car was great, and felt as fast or faster than any car out there. The
first pit stop was a bit of a disaster due to a very slow fuel pump, but Rob
soon got us back up into the top 10 again. And there we stayed until about
midnight (the race started at 4pm), when the gearbox broke.
Time for the pit crew to work their magic, and sure enough, 40 minutes later
they had us back out on track with the spare gearbox. We were right down the
grid, but gradually making our way back up and looking good for a top 3
British position. Until about 9am, when the chassis at the
back broke, and the car came back on the back of a truck. Our pit crew don't
let little things like that put them off, though, and quickly borrowed a
welder and set about getting us back on track. An hour or so later, we were
running again, but too far down the order to get any sort of result, finally
finishing in 61st place.
Now we know we have the pace, we are confident that next year, we can do
really well, fingers crossed.
